The V&A’s Hollywood Costume Exhibition

V&A Museum's Hollywood Costume Exhibition

I don’t want to wish the year away, but I can’t wait for October to arrive and the V&A’s new Hollywood Costume exhibition. You don’t often get the chance to stand toe-to-toe with a dress worn by Marilyn or (one of my childhood idols) Indiana Jones!

This is what the V&A had to say about the exhibition:

The V&A’s autumn exhibition, ‘Hollywood Costume’, explores the central role costume design plays in cinema storytelling. Bringing together over 100 of the most iconic movie costumes from across a century of film-making, it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the clothes worn by unforgettable and beloved characters such as Dorothy Gale, Indiana Jones, Scarlett O’Hara, Jack Sparrow, Holly Golightly and Darth Vader.

Keira Knightly as Cecilia Tallis in Atonement (2007) wearing a green evening dress by Jacqueline Durran. Judy Garland as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (1939)wearing a gingham dress by Adrian Adolph. Marilyn Monroe as Sugar Kane Kowalczyk in Some Like it Hot (1959) wearing a sequined and beaded dress with white fur stole by Orry-Kelly. Helena Bonham Carter as Lucy Honeychurch in A Room With a View (1985), by Jenny Beavan and John Bright. Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), costume by Hubert De Givenchy. Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939) wearing a green curtain dress by Walter Plunkett. Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher The Iron Lady (2011) wearing a blue suit by Consolata Boyle. Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007, wearing an Elizabethan orange dress, ruff and undergarments by Alexandra Byrne. Tippi Hedren as Melanie Daniels in The Birds (1963), wearing a green jacket and a matching, sleeveless dress, by Edith Head. V&A Museum's Hollywood Costume Exhibition Kate Winslet as Rose DeWitt Bukater in Titanic (1997) wearing a black and white dress by Deborah L. Scott. Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra (1963), costume by Irene Sharaff. Sharon Stone as Catherine Tramell in Basic Instinct (1992) by Ellen Mirojnick.

The exhibition will run from 20 October 2012 – 27 January 2013 at the V&A in London. Source: V&A and Vogue
